Study in South Korea from Nepal
What does studying in South Korea cost a Nepali student, and what are the visa requirements?
South Korea is the cheapest English-accessible destination after Germany, and the one with the most generous government scholarship. National university tuition runs about ₩4.5 million a year, a realistic first year comes to NPR 16–26 lakh, and the Global Korea Scholarship covers tuition, living costs and airfare for those who win it. The unusual part is work. Korea ties your permitted part-time hours to your TOPIK level, so learning Korean is not a cultural nicety — it directly sets how much you may earn.

What study in south korea is
Low tuition, a fully funded government scholarship worth applying for, and the only destination where how many hours you may work depends on how good your Korean is.
Tuition is low and dormitories are cheap, so Seoul rent is what actually decides your budget.
A comparatively quick process — and the one place where the university you choose changes how hard your own visa review will be.
Who needs it
- Students prepared to learn Korean
- TOPIK level governs scholarships, course access and employability after graduation.
- Students on a moderate budget
- Costs sit below the English-speaking destinations, and university scholarships are comparatively common.
- Students in technology and engineering
- Provision in these fields is strong and closely tied to the industries around it.
What it costs
What you are quoted is rarely what you pay. “Tuition” does not include living costs for 12 months; — does not include korean course toward topik 3–4; — does not include key money deposit, if you live off campus.

Step by step
Admission, and check the grade
Get your standard admission letter. Confirm the university's certification status, because it affects the scrutiny your application receives.
Apply for the D-2 at the embassy
Submit admission documents, financial evidence and your TOPIK or English result. Processing commonly runs four to eight weeks.
Arrive, register, then apply to work
Get your Alien Registration Card within 90 days, enrol in national health insurance, then apply for part-time work permission.
Mistakes that cost money
Your Korean level sets your work hours
What it costs: In most countries a student visa comes with a fixed weekly work allowance. Korea grades it: permitted hours during term rise with your TOPIK level, and students below the threshold are capped well under those who have passed higher levels. You also need permission before you start working at all, and some sectors are c
Instead: Address this before lodging. It is the most common single cause of refusal for this destination.
Financial evidence not convincing
What it costs: Balances that appear late, or a sponsor whose documented income does not support the claim.
Instead: Check this against the authority's published criteria before you apply, not after a refusal.
Document authenticity doubted
What it costs: Applications from Nepal are examined closely. A single questionable document can end an otherwise strong case.
Instead: Check this against the authority's published criteria before you apply, not after a refusal.
The university's certification grade
What it costs: A university managing international students poorly triggers tighter review of every applicant to it, including you.
Instead: Check this against the authority's published criteria before you apply, not after a refusal.
Study plan reads as a work plan
What it costs: A stated intention to study that the file suggests is really about employment is refused.
Instead: Check this against the authority's published criteria before you apply, not after a refusal.
Alternatives, and the trade-off
Japan
Better when: You prefer a larger and longer-established international student system at a similar cost.
Germany
Better when: You want low cost with more English-taught options.
In favour
- Comparatively common university scholarships
- Lower total cost than English-speaking destinations
- Strong technology and engineering provision
- National health insurance covers registered students
Against
- Your budget depends on working from day one — You need permission before working at all, your hours are capped by your TOPIK level, and permission comes only after your Alien Registration Card. Australia or Japan give you more from the start.
- You need an English-taught bachelor's — English-taught undergraduate programmes are scarce. Without TOPIK 3–4 your options narrow to a short list of graduate courses.
- You want the widest global job market afterwards — Korean employment often expects Korean fluency and Korean qualifications. It rewards students who commit to the language, and frustrates those who do not.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to study in South Korea from Nepal?
About NPR 16–26 lakh for a first year at a national university living in a dormitory. Tuition is roughly ₩4.5 million a year, which is among the lowest of any destination we cover.
Housing is what moves the number. A university dormitory can cost a quarter of an off-campus flat in Seoul, and off-campus renting also demands a large key-money deposit. Take the dorm in your first year if it is offered.
How do work hours actually work in Korea?
You need permission before working at all, granted after you receive your Alien Registration Card. Once authorised, the hours you may work during term rise with your TOPIK level, and some sectors are closed to students regardless.
This is unique among the destinations here, and it has a direct financial consequence: improving your Korean raises your legal earning ceiling. Budget on what your current level allows, not the maximum.
What is the Global Korea Scholarship and can Nepali students get it?
GKS is a Korean government scholarship covering tuition, a monthly living allowance, airfare and usually a year of Korean language training. Nepali students are eligible and do win it.
It is competitive and it runs on its own timetable — usually earlier than ordinary admissions, through either an embassy track or a university track. If Korea interests you at all, find the deadline before you plan anything else.
Do I need TOPIK to study in Korea?
For Korean-taught degrees, generally yes — level 3 is a common admission floor and level 4 is expected for many programmes, with some requiring it to graduate.
English-taught programmes exist without TOPIK, mainly at master's level. But TOPIK also governs your work hours and your daily life, so studying in English does not make Korean optional in practice.
Does it matter which Korean university I choose?
More than in most countries. Universities are graded on how well they manage international students, and applicants to a poorly graded institution face tighter visa review.
So check certification status while you shortlist, not after you have an offer. An agent who cannot tell you a university's status is not one to rely on.
Do I need a consultancy to apply to Korean universities?
No. Korean universities accept direct applications through their own international admissions offices, and GKS applications go through the embassy or the university.
Where advice helps is checking certification status, timing GKS against ordinary deadlines, and being realistic about TOPIK. Ask whether they will do those three things — and treat any promise about working hours or earnings as a reason to walk away.
